Kick off your summer at the Briscoe! Join us for fun flicks, food truck fare, and Ranger Creek Brewery beer. Dr. Andrew Patrick Nelson, Chair of the Department of Film and Media Arts and Associate Professor of Film Studies at the University of Utah returns to introduce each film for our annual Summer Film Series with films selected to pair perfectly with our new exhibition, Still in the Saddle.

July 18: True Grit (1969) G; 2hr 8min; A drunken, hard-nosed U.S. Marshal and a Texas Ranger help a stubborn teenager track down her father’s murderer in Indian territory.

August 22: The Long Riders (1980); R; 1hr 40 min; The origins, exploits and the ultimate fate of the Jesse James gang is told in a sympathetic portrayal of the bank robbers made up of brothers who begin their legendary bank raids because of revenge.

September 5: The Shootist (1976); PG; 1hr 40min; The Shootist features the story of notorious gun-fighter J. B. Books. Books, who comes to Carson City, Nevada and receives a grim prognosis from his physician. Learning he has only weeks left to live, Books takes up residence at the boarding house of the widow, Mrs. Bond Rogers and her incorrigible son Gillom. As word of Book’s condition spread he is forced to recon with his reputation as well as his mortality. Before deciding to shorten his suffering in one last battle he takes Gillom under his wing to teach him how to be a man of principle.

Safety Policy

The Briscoe Summer Film Series will be shown to limited seating audiences in the museum’s Jack Guenther Pavilion, a spacious, high-ceilinged event facility that opens to the McNutt Sculpture Garden. Seating will be drafthouse style seating, with tables at each seat to allow for distancing between rows and social distancing between parties.
