Serendipity at Fiorella
One of the few two story buildings in town, The Old Standby in Castroville, TX began it's colorful career as a saloon in 1857. The stucco-covered building, located on what is today Fiorella Street, was built by Frederick Huechling as a bar downstairs with the family living quarters upstairs. It, no doubt, enjoyed its location across from what was then the county courthouse on the main road from San Antonio to Del Rio.
In 1880, it changed hands and name. The Greenfront Saloon attained a notorious reputation as the scene of at least two recounted shootings involving county law officers.
In 1907, the back single-story portion of the house was added to include a family kitchen and room for the then-owner's grandfather. Prohibition saw the close of the saloon, a new owner, and the opening of a drug store and soda fountain. Both the building and business were sold in 1959.
After the business moved to newer quarters in 1966, the building housed several businesses. In 1977, it regained its title as The Old Standby Saloon. And nearly two years later, fire destroyed portions of the ceiling and floor around the same time the building was being converted into a single family dwelling. After surviving the damage, this historical building was recognized with the PCH and San Antonio Conservation Society Markers, symbolizing its importance to Castroville history.
Today, the building is home to Serendipity at Fiorella, an event and venue center owned and operated by Rachel and Joe Torres. Born from a dream of Rachel, and a serendipitous stumble upon the Old Standby in 2016, Serendipity is now the reality of the Torres family. With fun, beautiful, and eclectic events, venue rentals, and custom parties, Serendipity at Fiorella offers something for everyone.
From The Dip out back, to a children's party room upstairs, the venue is proud to be a part of the rich history of The Old Standby. Serendipity offers events for the holidays, complete with over 15 beer labels, handcrafted specialty drinks, and wine — not to mention, great opportunities for kid, lots of yard space, and rental space for your next event.
