It’s a Mother’s Day Serenade and a prelude to the Tejano Conjunto Festival. May’s Free Second Sunday at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures features "Accordions Across Cultures," with performances of Mexican, German and Czech accordion music and screening "Valerio Longoria: For A Quarter A Song," a documentary on accordionist and Conjunto Hall of Fame member, Valerio Longoria.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Performances include Valerio’s son, Flavio Longoria, playing Conjunto accordion music, and Laura Niland and company, playing German and Czech accordion music. The day concludes with a jam session, combining the styles of various cultures that share the accordion in common.

Presenters on the history of the accordion, Conjunto music and the pioneers of the musical style include Tejano Conjunto Festival director Juan Tejeda, professor Manuel Medrano of UT-Brownsville.

Children will have an opportunity to make a paper carnation Mother’s Day gift at the craft tables.
