Have you ever wondered how a sketch becomes a living, breathing character on the big screen? This camp pulls back the curtain on the "Animation Pipeline" used by industry giants like Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, and DreamWorks. We don't just watch movies—we deconstruct them to learn the craft behind the magic.
The 12 Principles of Animation
To create professional-grade movement, students will explore the foundational "12 Principles" pioneered by Disney’s master animators. We focus on:
-
Squash and Stretch: Giving characters a sense of weight and flexibility.
-
Timing and Spacing: Mastering the physics of motion to make actions feel natural or comedic.
-
Staging and Appeal: Learning how to direct the viewer's eye and create characters that audiences connect with.
Tools of the Trade
Campers will get hands-on experience with the digital tools used in modern studios. Throughout the week, they will:
-
Digital Storyboarding: Planning out sequences to visualize a story before animating.
-
Keyframing & Tweening: Learning how to use software to interpolate movement between major poses.
-
Layering & Composition: Building complex scenes by separating backgrounds, characters, and effects.
Studio-Style Projects
The camp is designed to mirror a real studio environment. Students will work on various projects, ranging from:
-
The Classic Flour Sack: A rite of passage for every professional animator to practice personality through simple shapes.
-
Character Walk Cycles: Creating a seamless, looping movement that defines a character's "vibe."
-
The Short Film Showcase: Applying all learned methods to a final original scene, complete with "acting" and cinematic flair.
Beyond the Screen
Beyond technical skills, campers develop patience, observation, and visual storytelling. They will learn to look at the world around them—how a ball bounces, how a person walks when they’re tired—and translate those real-world physics into digital art.
By the end of the week, every camper will have a reel of their own animations and a deep understanding of the professional workflows that power the world’s most beloved films.
