Black Cowboys: An American Story at the Witte Museum explores the lives and work of the numerous Black men, women and children—enslaved and free—who labored on the ranches of Texas and participated on cattle drives before the Civil War through the turn of the twentieth century.

Students from schools around San Antonio will perform dramatized selections and exhibit their own artwork created in response to Black Cowboys: An American Story at the Robert J. and Helen C. Kleberg South Texas Heritage Center.

Steering Committee Chair, Aaronetta Pierce, moderates a discussion on Black cowboys and the American West featuring esteemed scholar Dr. Daina Ramey Berry, Professor and Chair of the History Department at The University of Texas at Austin and co-curator Ronald W. Davis II, PhD Candidate in History at the University of Texas at Austin.

Black Cowboys: A Conversation on Restored Legacies
6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Join Deborah Omowale Jarmon, CEO/Director of San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM), in conversation with Lola Kelly Wilcox Moore of the Wilcox Ranch in Seguin and Rosalind Alexander-Kasparik of The Alexander Farm in Pilot Knob, to discuss the restoration of Black ranches and farms in Texas.
