Creative Lab: 3D Printing & Design | Kids Out and About San Antonio

Creative Lab: 3D Printing & Design

Turn your ideas into objects! This camp dives into the world of 3D printing, the fastest and most creative way to bring products to life. Students will master the Rapid Prototyping cycle—taking a basic concept, designing it in 3D software, and watching it print in real-time. By blending artistic creativity with industrial productivity, campers will navigate the entire development pipeline to manufacture their very own custom-designed finished products!

Welcome to the future of manufacturing. This camp is dedicated to one of the most transformative technologies in the modern world: 3D Printing. Whether it’s creating custom medical tools or the next great toy, 3D printing has revolutionized how we think about "making things." In this lab, students move from being passive consumers to active producers.

The Power of Rapid Prototyping

At the heart of this camp is the Rapid Prototyping workflow used by engineers and designers at companies like SpaceX and Nike. Students will learn to iterate quickly through a professional development cycle:

  • Ideation: Brainstorming solutions to real-world problems or creative prompts.

  • CAD Design: Using Computer-Aided Design software to build precise 3D models.

  • Slicing & Settings: Understanding the "language" of the printer—learning about layer height, infill, and supports to ensure a successful build.

  • The Print Phase: Operating the hardware and troubleshooting the physical printing process.

From Digital Pixels to Physical Plastic

Throughout the week, students will explore the "ins-and-outs" of additive manufacturing. They will discover:

  • Material Science: What makes 3D printing plastics unique and how they behave under heat.

  • Spatial Geometry: Thinking in three dimensions to ensure their designs are structurally sound.

  • Iterative Design: Printing a "draft" version, finding the flaws, and refining the digital model for a perfect final product.

The Final Build

The week culminates in a Custom Product Launch. Every camper will spend the final days perfecting a unique creation—be it a functional gadget, an artistic sculpture, or a mechanical part—and taking it home as a tangible testament to their new skills.

Skills for the Next Industrial Revolution

This camp is the perfect blend of creativity and productivity. Students leave not only with a physical object but with a deep understanding of the "Maker" mindset: the ability to see a need, design a solution, and manufacture it themselves.
