Welcome to the foundational world of robotics! The VEX 123 camp is specifically designed to introduce young innovators to the exciting intersection of hardware and logic. Using the tactile and intuitive VEX 123 platform, we turn abstract computer science concepts into physical, "touchable" learning experiences.
The Learning Roadmap
Our curriculum follows a "crawl, walk, run" approach to technology, ensuring every student builds a solid foundation:
-
Tactile Control: Learning the basics of robot movement through physical touch and directional commands.
-
Coded Sequences: Transitioning to "Coder Cards" and block-based programming to create longer, more complex instructions.
-
Logic & Navigation: Using sensors to help the robot "decide" how to move through its environment.
Challenges & Missions
Learning is most effective when it’s an adventure. Throughout the week, campers will apply their skills to a variety of interactive challenges:
-
The Great Navigation: Programming robots to navigate through intricate, student-designed obstacle courses.
-
Real-World Simulations: Tackling "jobs" inspired by real-life robotics, such as autonomous delivery or environmental cleanup tasks.
-
Collaborative Coding: Working in "dev teams" to brainstorm and troubleshoot logic, fostering essential communication skills.
Skills Beyond the Screen
While the focus is on robotics, the "hidden" curriculum of this camp focuses on high-level cognitive development. Campers will strengthen:
-
Creative Problem-Solving: Learning that "failure" is just another word for "debugging."
-
Algorithmic Thinking: Breaking down big goals into small, sequential steps.
-
Spatial Awareness: Understanding how digital commands translate into physical movement across a 2D plane.
The Final Showcase
On the last day, campers will demonstrate their mastery by programming their robots to complete a "Grand Mission" that combines everything they've learned about sequencing, logic, and physical navigation. They’ll leave with the confidence to say, "I can program a robot!"
