Ile de Mounts Deserts: Visiting Mount Desert Island, ME with Kids
by Ella S. Ross
I have to admit, I am completely biased here. I love Mount Desert Island. I could spend the rest of my life exploring the tide pools of Acadia and never get tired of it. But I should try to say something other than just my romantic ramblings.
Acadia national park is of course a highlight of this place, with its rocks and its heights. But going out onto the ocean, seeing the wildlife, learning about it, learning about the life and industry of Maine’s coastline, and walking around downtown Bar Harbor are all things also not to be missed.
So, now you know my favorite place. If you tell me yours I’ll happily give it a shot, but a part of my heart will always remain in Maine.

Oceanarium and Education Center
The Gulf of Maine is home to uncountable bizarre and otherworldly creatures that live beneath the waves, atop the waves, and along our shores. It’s also home to numerous coastal communities whose residents make their living from the sea and visitors from near and far who enjoy our beaches, marshes, and waterways.
The mission of the Oceanarium is to bring a small piece of this exotic world to the surface so visitors can gain a window into the everyday lives of these incredible creatures and the lives of people who depend on them.

Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park may appear small on a map, but the park encompasses nearly 50,000 acres along the Atlantic Coastline of Maine — including Mount Desert Island, Schoodic Peninsula, Isle au Haut, and other outer islands. 60 miles of coastline, 33 miles of scenic motor roads, 45 miles of carriage roads, and more than 150 miles of hiking trails provide numerous ways to explore the park.
Cadillac Mountain
Cadillac Mountain is a popular destination for visitors to Acadia National Park. Accessible by car, it is the highest point on the eastern seaboard of the U.S., and offers magnificent views of a glaciated coastal and island landscape. The short, paved Cadillac Summit Loop Trail, interpretive waysides, restrooms, and gift shop are located at the summit.
Sail Acadia
Sail Acadia National Park with Captain Karl aboard the Alice E, the world's oldest Friendship Sloop still sailing. Built in 1899, the Friendship Sloop Alice E. was originally a working sailing craft used by Maine fisherman. Now she offers private and shared charters in the Bar Harbor area for up to six passengers every day from May to October, from Southwest Harbor, Maine. Sail Acadia also offers private and shared charters aboard the Friendship Sloop Helen Brooks out of Northeast Harbor, as well as nature cruises (with lobster fishing!), private charters, and water taxi service aboard our wooden lobster boat, the Elizabeth T.
Downtown Bar Harbor
There’s something magical about Bar Harbor. A celebrated vacation destination on Mount Desert Island that is the gateway to Acadia National Park, it possesses a rich history and culture unlike any other.
The natural beauty that surrounds Bar Harbor is punctuated with ocean cliffs and rocky beaches, glacier‐formed lakes and valleys, unobstructed mountain vistas, and boreal forest. This beauty has been captured in the works of Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, Fitz Henry Lane, and many other great artists.
But wait, there's more!
