Our study involves a visit to our lab on the UIW campus and an online questionnaire. During your visit, we will put a cap on your child's head like the one pictured on facebook. The cap has holes in it for the electrode gel (a very light watery gel substance) and the electrode plugs. We use a plastic tip syringe just for placing the gel in each hole. We are recording the electrical activity from the brain at the scalp. This is a safe procedure that has been used with people of all ages for decades. Dr. Taylor-Partridge has been using the procedure for 10 years with infants and children at UT Austin and here at UIW. If at any point you wish to stop the study, you are welcome to do so. If your little one gets fussy or uncomfortable, we can either take a break or stop the study. Our goal is to keep little ones and parents happy throughout the study process.
Once the set up is complete, your child sits on your lap during the study. We show children animations of shapes. We also like to show faces that I have used in previous studies. Currently the faces consist of undergraduate women with a pleasant expression. After the study is over, we remove the cap and wipe off any excessive gel with baby wipes or a wet wash rag. The gel comes off easily, although you may want to wash your child’s hair when you get home to get out any additional gel that doesn’t come off with our baby wipes. We currently offer up to $30 in gift cards for children 6 months to 6 years.
